Live bees to be supplied to gardeners

There is a first time for everything and now gardeners will be able to purchase bees either by mail order or from garden centres. Dragonfli and Wildlife World will be marketing live bumblebee hives for gardeners and garden centres.

Gardeners are increasingly being offered new ways to support pollination at home, including the opportunity to install a purpose-built bumblebee hive supplied with a live colony of native UK bees. Marketed as the Beepol Bumblebee Lodge, the wooden hive is designed to house a managed colony of bumblebees, typically the native species Bombus terrestris, which is widely used in commercial crop pollination.

The initiative, introduced to the garden retail sector by Dragonfli, represents a notable development for garden centres. According to managing director Julian Ives, it marks the first time live bumblebee colonies have been made widely available to home gardeners through mainstream retail outlets.

Bumblebees are highly efficient pollinators, particularly for fruit and certain vegetable crops. Unlike honeybees, they are capable of “buzz pollination” — a technique in which the bee vibrates the flower to release pollen. This makes them especially effective for crops such as tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Gardeners growing top fruit, soft fruit or glasshouse crops can therefore expect improved fruit set and potentially higher yields where pollination has previously been inconsistent.

The Beepol lodge itself is constructed from timber and designed to provide insulation and weather protection for the colony. The hive contains a queen, workers and developing brood, allowing pollination to begin immediately after installation. Colonies are typically active for a single season, after which the new queens disperse naturally and the original colony declines, mirroring the natural life cycle of wild bumblebees.

Beyond the horticultural benefits, the presence of a working bumblebee colony can add a new dimension of interest to the garden. Observing bees as they forage and return to the hive offers an engaging way to understand pollination and insect behaviour. For families, it provides a practical and educational opportunity for children to learn about ecology, food production and the importance of pollinators in sustaining biodiversity.

However, responsible management is essential. Gardeners are encouraged to position hives in a sheltered location, ensure a continuous supply of nectar- and pollen-rich flowers, and follow supplier guidance to minimise stress to the colony. As with all managed pollinators, care must be taken to avoid disease transmission to wild bee populations.

As awareness grows around pollinator decline and food security, initiatives such as the Beepol Bumblebee Lodge highlight the increasing role that home gardeners can play in supporting both productive harvests and wider environmental stewardship.
